Cartouche
by Eliza Yetter
(revised January 2007)

Also called Ren or name-amulet.

The cartouche forms a protective circle around the name of a deity or king/queen which is further knotted at one end to bind the protection.

Today, many people have a cartouche made with their own names written phonetically in Egyptian hieroglyphs. These are worn around the neck to protect the wearer.

A cartouche for the wall can also be made using modelling clay and plaster paris.
