Padded Felt Sword Let me get this out of the way now. If you decide to make this for your child, please make sure you sit down with your child and talk to him or her about not hitting other people with this or any other object. I take responsibility for my children and I expect other parents to do the same with theirs. Therefore, I will not be held responsible for any injuries. That being said, let me also say that my son has gone through three of these swords (one a year) so far. He's never been hurt by it nor has he hurt any living being with it. He has, on the other hand, fought and beaten a number of stuffed play animals. I find my swords safer than the cheap plastic swords which rarely last more than two days. Needed: Making the Pattern: The pattern is easily made by folding a piece of paper and cutting as shown below.
Instructions: 1. Cut two blades from gray felt. Cut two handles from black or brown felt. 2. Take one blade and one handle. Pin the blade onto the handle. Do the same with the remaining blade and handle.
3. Make sure both handles and blades line up perfectly and then sew the blade onto each handle as shown above. 4. Place one of the half-swords on top of the other and sew along the sides. Leave the bottom open as shown below.
5. Use a stick that is shorter than the size of the sword.
6. Wrap the stick in quilt padding and then duct tape it into place. Make sure the ends of the stick are well-padded.
7. Insert some batting into the tip of the sword and then insert the padded stick. 8. Fill loose areas around the padded stick with more batting. 9. Sew shut. 10. If you've used a hardwood stick this sword should last for at least a year. Once the stick gets broken or the felt wears through it is time to make a new sword. Copyright 2002, Eliza Fegley |
