These are incredibly simple to make and fun, too. Make orange and black ones for Halloween gifts, red and green ones for Yule, and a green one with silk flowers sewn onto it for May Day. :-) Fabric: Cotton or cotton blend. First create a paper pattern of an 18 inch circle. The easiest way for me to do this was to fold a large piece of paper in half and then in half again. Then I cut a piece of string, 9 inches, taped it to the folded corner and used it to draw a quarter of the circle. When your pattern is made, use it to cut out two circles from fabric of two different colors/patterns. This hat is reversible. Pin right sides together and sew 1/4" in from edges. Leave an opening. Turn right sides out, hand sew the opening closed, and iron. Next, sew a complete circle 1-1/2" from the edge.
Sew a second circle about 1/2 to 3/4" from the first circle, as shown.
Make a slit between the sewn circles to insert the elastic. I used 1/4" elastic. Measure elastic around your head and cut it an inch longer than needed. Insert elastic between sewn circles. When threaded through, overlap elastic ends and sew together. Stitch hole closed. Your finished! Add ribbons or other embellishments if desired. Copyright 2003, Eliza Fegley |
